We are seeking candidates from a variety of backgrounds and experiences who are interested in serving a diverse and growing community.

Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue is establishing an eligible list we will use to fill upcoming and future firefighter vacancies.
We anticipate having a Summer 2024 academy.  
To apply, candidates must have completed and passed:

FireTEAM test administered by National Testing Network by the application dated 12 months from the application close date of March 24, 2024.
A passing Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) taken between October 9, 2022, through April 9, 2024.  This is a change from past recruitments.  A CPAT certification will be accepted from any organization authorized and licensed by the IAFF and IAFC.
We understand for some candidates the cost of the CPAT can be a burden.  We partner with National Testing Network (NTN) to provide a fee waiver program for those who cannot afford the CPAT testing fee.  There are a limited number of waivers available for those who qualify.  The CPAT waiver request form with instructions is available here.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions of the Firefighter – EMT and Firefighter Paramedic position include, but are not limited to, the following duties and responsibilities:

Responds to alarms; performs all necessary duties as a firefighter including, but not limited to, hose line operations, fire pump operation, operation of heavy equipment (including hydraulic rescue tools), functions with hand tools necessary in fire suppression including walking on pitched roofs and cutting holes in roofs and/or walls using power or hand tools, life safety activities, rescue operations including forcible entry, property conservation operations, clean-up projects, and all other activities as required.

EMT
Provides first responder medical emergency response at the basic life support level, including initial patient and situation assessment, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and trauma emergency medical care; prepares patients and assists paramedics in advanced life support medical care while remaining within their certified scope of practice.
Paramedic
Performs emergency medical services as consistent with EMT-P rating and District policy. Responds as part of a team to medical alarms and other emergencies and performs appropriate emergency medical service. Responds to emergency scenes and maintains radio communication with the Dispatch office, local hospitals for medical consultation, and other response units.

Directs or provides advanced life support care on emergency scenes including triage, EKG interpretation, drug therapy, splinting, bandaging, immobilizing patient, extrication, and all other related duties involved in on-scene patient care.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Required for Initial Employment
High school diploma or equivalent.
EMS License:

EMT license or National Registry certification as a EMT at time of application. Must possess State of Oregon EMT license by date of employment.
Paramedic license or National Registry certification as a Paramedic at time of application. Must possess State of Oregon Paramedic license by date of employment.
A current, valid driver’s license and a driving record insurable by the District’s insurer.
Must meet National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards for health and fitness.
In addition to a high school diploma, a post-high school education or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred and will be considered.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Must effectively perform essential job functions under stressful physical and mental conditions.  Must meet National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards for health and fitness.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Under stressful physical and mental conditions, while wearing personal protective ensembles and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), perform all necessary duties as a firefighter.

Climbing ladders, operating from heights, walking or crawling in the dark along narrow and uneven surfaces, and operating in proximity to electrical power lines and/or other hazards.

Unpredictable emergency requirements for prolonged periods of extreme physical exertion without benefit of warm-up, scheduled rest periods, meals, access to medications or hydration.

Reports/remains at work during major emergencies and/or disasters with little or no notice.

Work with a wide variety of hazardous materials as required. Exposure to various hazards, such as disease, chemicals, fumes, and other hazards as necessary. Exposure to toxic fumes, irritants, particulates, biological (infectious) and non-biological hazards, and or heated gases, despite the use of personal protective ensembles and SCBA.

The starting monthly salary range within a step system for this position is $6012.92 – $8,557.58 per month.

Premiums for this position are:
EMT Intermediate hourly – 7.5% (post academy)
EMT Advanced hourly – 5% (post academy)

The premium for this position is: Paramedic hourly – 12% (post academy)

April 2024 – Establish eligibility list

To be placed on the eligible list applicants must:

Pass the FireTEAM test and the video interview

To be considered passing, you must meet or exceed the minimum scores as follows:
– Human Relations test score: pass point of 70% (one of two factors used to calculate exam score)
– Mechanical test score: pass point of 60% (pass/fail)
– Reading test score: pass point of 80% (pass/fail)
– Math test score: pass point of 70% (pass/fail)

Successfully complete the CPAT.  The CPAT dates we will accept has been updated to: October 9, 2022, through April 9, 2024. A CPAT will be accepted from any organization authorized and licensed by the IAFF and IAFC.

We anticipate conducting an August 2024 academy and will invite candidates from the eligible list to an onsite panel interview, in accordance with Civil Service rules. Our anticipated schedule is:
